FITZGERALD — Rockmart’s magic season came up against an offensive storm in south Georgia as the Jackets were blown away by the No. 2 team in the state and came home after a 48-21 loss to the Purple Hurricanes.
Rockmart set the tone of the game early with Morgan Sims going 85 yards after finding a hole in the Fitzgerald defense for a touchdown within seconds of the game on their first possession following a short gain on the opening kickoff.
It didn’t take long for Fitzgerald to respond as their quarterback James Graham got loose from the Rockmart defense on a third down on the Purple Hurricanes’ first possession and scored a 58 yard touchdown.
What knocked Rockmart out of their rhythm was a touchdown run called back on a holding call during the next kickoff return, with the Jackets losing the ball on third down on an interception.
The Hurricanes then put up two more scores in the first quarter and another near halftime to take a 27-7 lead over Rockmart.
Running back JD King put in a 3-yard on the second play following a first interception off of Rockmart quarterback Dylan Bailey, then Graham again on a short run.
Bailey threw two more interceptions in the first half, but the Hurricanes weren’t able to capitalize off of them. A second quarter drive added another touchdown, but without the extra point after Fitzgerald
