Ensley: A reminder of the watering rules under Level 2

- By RICKY ENSLEY

Due to prolonged dry weather our area is currently subject to outdoor water use rules known as Level 2 Drought Response.

The Georgia Water Stewardship Act of 2010 establishes certain outdoor watering protocols to conserve water during times of drought.

When can i water outdoors?

For existing landscapes, a drought response Level 2 initiates the odd/even watering schedule by address. For even addresses, watering is allowed as needed on Wednesday and Saturday between the hours of 4 pm and 10 am.

For odd addresses, watering is allowed as needed on Thursday and Sunday between the hours of 4 pm and 10 am. Sprinkler systems should be properly maintained and adjusted.

What is allowed any day, any time?

The following are allowable exemptions: • Watering new plantings up to 30 days after installed • Hand watering with a hose or watering can Drip irrigation and soaker hoses • Water of athletic fields, golf courses, and public recreation areas • Watering food gardens • Water from an alternate source (grey water or air-conditioner condensation)

What is not allowed?

• Washing hard surfaces, such as streets and sidewalks

• Water or ornamental purposes, such as fountains • Non-commercial washing of vehicles • Non-commercial pressure washing • Fundraising car washes

Remember Fall is the best time to install most new plants. Roots develop throughout the Fall and Winter but less water is required when compared to planting in the heat of Summer.

Do not forget to water only when plants or turf are dry.
