Lady Jackets fight Dragons and Indians for wins

- By Tyler Williams

The Rockmart Lady Jackets soccer team stormed into the Rock on last week and picked up a region win against the Pepperell Lady Dragons in a 3-2 finish in their first home game of the season, then did it again on Friday showing their promise for the season so far.

Despite the weather conditions the girls still pushed through the whole game having some great feats on their side to pick up the win.

Montana Barber scored her first goal from the wing to start the girls off, which was followed by Madison Bozydaj who tied the girls up with a penalty kick,

Ashlyn Jay set the girls up for the victory with the third and final score on the night over the Lady Dragons.

The defense played big in this game and kept most the pressure off Imani McCluskey, who ended the game with just 5 saves that collectively kept the Jackets in this game.

“Lady Jackets soccer has always been a wonderful place for us as coaches,” said coach Kristan Crawford after Tuesday’s win. “The girls started a little slow today, but by second half they picked it up and played like they was supposed to play.”

On Friday, Armuchee put up a good fight against the Lady Jackets but could not handle the swarm. the game ended up 3 to 0. Madison bozydaj scored 2 goals, the first off a penalty kick, and then she had the final score this game.

Halle Maxwell also scored this game to collectively lead the girls to a victory.

Sarah Adair saved seven goals as the freshmen goalie and the defense was rock solid to end the week.

“The girls played real hard today (Friday),” said co-head coach Michael Bozydaj after the game tonight “It was a little to slow start but when they picked it up, they put it on and played Lady Jacket soccer tonight.”

Bozydaj said so far, the team is doing well and living up to her expectactions.

“”We have a great team,” she said.

“They are young but sometimes our girls are not all together the whole game. It takes them a while to warm up but soon as they do, our team i s unstoppable. We should be able to beat anybody in this region with no problem.”

Meanwhile, the boys team hasn’t had the luck that the girls have.

Rockmart’s Feb. 21 game was called due to weather, meaning they didn’t make it onto the pitch until Feb. 24.

The Jackets came out with strong effort in a aggressive game against Armuchee but lost the game in the second half; the final score ended up being 4-1.

Luis Pizano scored in the first with Pedro Hernandez on the assist.

“It was a very very aggressive game but we fell short,” said coach Pledger after the loss. “They got a few shots that usually don’t happen, but we didn’t step up where we needed to tonight.”

Rockmart travels to Gordon Central for their next region game on Friday, and will return to the road on March 8 to visit Armuchee.
