Cedartown track takes first place at Southeast Invitational

- From staff reports

Cedartown Track participated in the Southeast Invitational track meet over the weekend with 13 teams in attendance, and left with a first place finish which coach Michael Worthington said was a total team effort.

“We were able to get field event points on another stellar performance by Tyler Blalock in the shot and discus with throws of 53’9” shot, which earned him first place and 119 ft in the discus which earned him a third place finish,” Worthington said. “Tyler is coming off an ACL injury from football so was restricted on his throwing method at the start of the season.”

Blalock still managed to hit a 4A best throw in the shot and an MVP performance in throwing events.

Tim Brown also had a PR in the shot put with a throw of 43’ good for 3rd place.

Tony Mathis and Keshawn Kent added points in the long jump with jumps of 18’11” for Kent and 18’6” for Mathis good for 6th and 7th. Keshawn Kent also came through in the triple jump with a first place jump of 39’5”.

Freshman Taji Hudson brought points in also with a 7th place jump of 36’2”. Conrad Bristow had a PR in the pole vault with a jump of 9’.

After the field events, the Cedartown distance runner, Jason Blankenship went to work against teams that are known for being extremely good.

And to say he was clutch is an understatement, Worthington said.

Blankenship got the win in the 800 with a time of 2:08 and a second place finish in the 1600 with a time of 4:45.

In the sprint events, the team added points via Keshawn Kent in the 100 meter with a 6th place finish and a time of 11.3.

Joseph Gibbons had a personal record In the 200 meter with a time of 22.75 which would have been good for second but was disqualified for stepping out of lane. Gibbons showed great effort.

The Cedartown hurdlers also came through with Tony Mathis in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.2 good for third. Also, Lee Sisson finished 7th with a time of 17.9.

In the 300 hurdles, Mathis came in first place with a time of 45.0 and Sisson came in fifth with a time of 46.0. Going into the final events the 4/400 relay, Dalton was leading by half a point 88.5 to 88. Cedartown was short handed due to all the 4/400 team members not being in attendance.

“I had to challenge two members from the B 4/400 Squad, Conrad Bristow and Timyus House,” Worthington said. “They answered the call with two personal records in their legs of the 4/400. The 4/400 team was made up of Jason Blankenship,Joseph Gibbons, Timyus House and Conrad Bristow.”

They finished with a season best 3:39 and first place beating Dalton by 7 seconds.

“This was a good win early in the season but we have a lot of work to do if we want to achieve the goals that I have for this team after moving up to 4A,” Worthington said. “Our goal at Cedartown is to maximize the potential of all our student athletes.”
