Armuchee girls, Coosa boys win close matches

There was a fight to the finish in both soccer matches at Armuchee on Friday as the host teams and Coosa’s squads battled with Region 7-AA wins on the line.

Armuchee’s girls got a 3-2 overtime win over the Lady Eagles with Brandy Ann Wacker scoring all three goals for the Lady Indians, while Coosa’s boys had to pull out a 3-2 win in the final minutes of their match with the Indians.

In the girls’ match, Coosa got on the board first with Alexys Davis scoring off of a corner kick to make it 1-0. The two teams fought for control before Wacker posted her first goal 10 minutes into the second half.

Emily Martin then put Coosa ( 4- 2, 2- 2 7- AA) back on top with a goal on a penalty kick, but Wacker struck again to tie it up at 2-2. The score remained knotted up at the end of regulation, and Wacker added her third and final goal of the game three minutes into the first overtime period.

The Lady Indians (3-7, 2-3) held on through the next seven minutes of OT and picked up the win.

A similar first half played out in the boys’ match where Coosa’s Eric Chavez put the visiting Eagles up early with an unassisted goal in the third minute of play. The two teams then fought for control as Armuchee keeper Alex Lyle and Coosa keeper Gavin Hughes protected their team’s goal for the remainder of the first half.

Armuchee ( 6- 4, 4- 2) evened the score in the second half before Coosa’s Nohel Paz-Calderon got a goal late. The Indians answered and Coosa’s Jorge Lopez scored the winning goal in the final seconds to give the Eagles the win. Coosa (71, 5-0) had nine shots on goal, and Hughes finished with nine saves.

Coosa will host Model o n Tuesday whil e Armuchee travels to Lindale on Thursday to face Pepperell.

The Coosa boys’ soccer team emerged victorious with a 2-0 win Thursday on the road against Region 7-AA opponent Gordon Central.

The Eagles scored both goals in the opening half, with Jorge Lopez setting up a goal for Jose Reyes in the 32nd minute and Orlando Lopez scoring on a penalty kick in the 39th minute. Goal k e e p e r Gavi n Hughes pitched t he shutout with eight saves.

Coosa ( 5- 1, 3- 0 7- AA) plays again today when it travels to Armuchee.

Pepperell boys 4, Model.

Tee Jarrard opened scoring for Model in the first minute giving the Blue Devils ( 6- 3, 4- 2 7-AA) an early 1-0 lead.

Pepperell’s Slamon Ghani and Ramiro Alanis scored goals to take a 2-1 lead before Jarrard scored again for Model to tie the score 2-2.

Pepperell will travel to play Rockmart on Saturday.

The Model girls’ soccer team rolled to a Region 7-AA win Thursday with a 10- 0 shutout against Pepperell.

Kyla Reynolds led the Model ( 7- 2, 6- 1 7- AA) scoring with four goals; Jennifer Espinoza and Libby Upton scored two goals each; Nora Grace Snow had one goal; Shay McGill had one goal and one assist; Anna Ruth Parker had one assist; and Leilani Rojas had two assists.

Pepperell (4-3, 3-3) goalkeeper Lakeeya Wiggins had four saves. Pepperell was missing two starters and another player because of an injury.
