Good news for Polk County’s baseball clubs at Cedartown and Rockmart High Schools: both have made it to the playoffs again this year.
The Rockmart Yellow Jackets are in the Class AA baseball playoffs as the top seed from Region 7-AA after losing only one region game the entire season.
Rockmart wrapped up their regular season on April 20 with their senior night as they beat Armuchee in a 10-2 win. The Jackets split the week, winning two out of their final three games after falling to Gordon Lee in a rematch in 8 innings in a 9-6 loss on April 17, the followed that up with a 11-3 win over Coosa.
The pair of wins in the region allowed Rockmart to remain at the top of the rankings in 7-AA, and will now go on to face Jordan High School of Columbus in a best-of-three game first round of the playoffs against the Red Jackets.
Jordan comes into the Friday double headers, with an if necessary to be played on Saturday with a 14-16 over- all record for the season, and having gone 3-9 in Region 5-AA play. They’re coming off a season-ending loss to Mary Persons on April 21.
Rockmart is finishing off the regular season with an 18-10 record, and having gone 13-1 in the region before finishing at home against Armuchee last week.
One of the few teams Rockmart couldn’t overcome during the regular season was their cross-county rival Cedartown, who comes into the Class 4-A state playoffs as the third seed out of region 5-4A.
The Bulldogs, who are at 20-5 for the season and 8-4 in region play, finished behind Troup County, LaGrange and tied with Cartersville as they ended the season with a 6-5 win over Chapel Hill on April 18 at home for Senior Night.
They’ll face the second seed team from Region 7-4A, a to be determined opponent that wasn’t yet announced at press time over the weekend.
According to Maxpreps.com, Cedartown sits as the fourth ranked team in the state and are on a six game winning streak currently.
Rockmart sits at the 13th ranking in the state with a two- game winning streak under their belt as well.
