Cedartown Bulldogs fans can celebrate the finish of the golf season for the girls team ranked ninth in the state.

The team featuring four girls — two of those graduating this year — went to the state championship round of play Maple Ridge Golf Course in Columbus.

The Lady Bulldogs scored a 326 in the area tournament behind Central Carrollton to get into the state round of play, and finished ninth in the state with a score of 315.

Seniors Payton McElwee and Sydney Greenway were the top two players on the team with Keinsley Houston and Evie Blackmon backing them up as the top three scores were compiled for the team to get them into the state round.

Individually in the state championship, McElwee scored a 101 as 36th in the state. Greenway tied for 42nd with a score of 105, Houston in 49th with a score of 109, and Blackmon tied for 57th with a score of 117.

Cedartown’s team score was compiled as the top three scores for the team.

Head coach Jeremy Ruark said he was proud of the way his girls played in the 2017 season.

“They really worked hard and improved as the season went on,” Ruark said.

The Lady Bulldogs golf team joins the Bulldogs when they practice and host home matches at Meadow Lakes Golf Course for free annually.

Ruark said his team also is sponsored by the Georgia Women’s Golf Association through Lynn Mitchell, who provide a grant to sponsor the golf program.

Though the Cedartown boys finished tied for third place in area golf, they didn’t finish with a high enough score for qualifying for state championships in Class 4-A.
