Car strikes, kills man mowing yard

- From staff reports

A Polk County man who was cutting his grass was struck and killed by a driver this morning, according to information from the coroner's office.

Deputy Coroner Marty Robinson said that Phillips Henry Gentry, 74, of Rome Highway address near Aragon's northern boundary, was killed while cutting his grass this morning when an unidentified driver went off the roadway.

Robinson said the incident was still under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and he could not comment f urther on whether charges in the death were being pressed.

He said Gentry's remains were being transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's crime lab for an autopsy on Saturday afternoon.

GSP spokesperson Tracey Watson said that according to information from Troopers, the driver of a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina ,42- year-old Christopher Dion High of Rockmart, left the eastside of the roadway and struck a culvert, which sent his car airborne and struck Gentry, who was on his riding lawnmower in his yard at the time.

Gentry was pronounced dead on the scene, and the Special Collision Reconstruction Team continues their investigation as to how the wreck occurred.

Watson added that once the investigation is completed, the information will be forwarded on to District Attorney Jack Browning's office to determine if any charges are to be pressed.
