Homespun Festival preparations wrapping up with fun times ahead in Rockmart

- By SEAN WILLIAMS SJ Correspondent

Homespun is only 9 days away! Taking place from July 21st- 22nd on 133 S. Marble St., the 2017 edition of Rockmart's premier arts and crafts festival is coming to secure its place in the hearts of local citizens. The event is, as always, free.

As of July 6, Homespun has filled all vacant vendor positions and is no longer taking applications. This means festival goers are guaranteed to see a plethora of arts and crafts from some of the most talented local artists. Common items include pottery, jewelry, home decor, and various nick knacks.

For those who missed an opportunity to sell or aren't interested in buying: don't despair. Homespun has events and entertainment spanning both days of the festival.

Friday, June 21 marks the beginning of the annual Homespun 5k which begins 8 a. m. and precedes the 9 a.m. Fun Run.

The 5k run is a USATF certified course and a Peachtree Road Race Qualifier; the Fun Run is a $ 15.00 casual run for ages 5-11. Registered 5k runners can expect a tshirt and a tote bag, but runners must be registered by 7: 30 a. m. The race begins on the Silver Comet Trail next to the corner of Church St. and Water St. Younger festival goers ( ages 2- 5) can register in the Tot Trot for free to showcase their running skills.

The racing and arts and crafts showcase will be accompanied by various gospel musicians such as Mercy Rises, Greater Promise, and the Heir- born Quartet.

Saturday, June 22 features an even greater display of entertainment including the 10: 00 a. m. Shriner's Parade where citizens line the streets to watch the goofy antics of the Shriner's and their guests before the 10: 40 a.m. Ballet Garden.

The 11 a.m. Kiwanis Car Show is a staple of Homespun. A multitude of vintage and classic cars decorate the Homespun area and are on display for any attendee to see.

The 2 p.m. Rotary Duck Race is a treat for Homespun guests as they watch plastic ducks race down the Euharlee Creek to be crowned king of t he ducks.

Of course, Saturday will have live music playing throughout the day as well. The Wilson Brothers Band, The Dalton Dover Band, Whiskey Dixie, Them Mixon Boys, Jake Johnson, and more will make sure festival goers are tapping their feet all day long.

The concluding fireworks show is what truly makes Homespun, Homespun. Every years the festival ends in a blaze of colorful lights that makes the count down to next year's Homespun

Events with no specific time slot include, a rock climbing wall, inflatable obstacle course, jousting area, and a 22-foot slide.

The event is open to citizens outside of Rockmart, and guests are encouraged to attend.
