PSD students back in class

-

Students were back in the classroom this morning for the first time in the 2017-18 school year, and full of energy from a summer rest they were ready to tackle what obstacles education might throw at them this year.

At least, that's what new Cedartown Middle School principal Shannon Hulsey hoped would be the case during a special back-to-school challenge she placed before her pupils.

Hulsey teased the challenge early in the summer and told students to be ready to kick off the year ready to tackle anything that is ahead of t hem i n t he coming school year.

"We had kids calling all summer wanting to know what it meant," she said. "They get to find out today."

Today's opening challenge for the school year: enjoy running through an i nf la t a bl e o bst ac l e course and down a slide, then write about what obstacles they expect to face during the coming school year and how they planned to overcome those challenges. When winter break comes around, Hulsey said she plans to have the kids review at mid-year where they think they are in their own academic progress for the year, and then a special event at the end of the year as well.

She said she felt it was something that would benefit students in the l ong t erm since t hey would be able to look back at the end of the year and realize the challenges they faced at the time weren't so daunting after all.
