The Homecoming service for Mrs. Jacqueline “Jackie” Kay McKenzie Adair was held at the First Baptist Church of Rockmart on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jerry Adair Jr., Rev. Mike Woods and Rev. Jason Odom officiating. Interment services followed at Rockmart Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Lucille Bedford Ashmore, age 9 4 of Cedartown passed away on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017.

She was born on Sept. 7, 1922 in Scottsdale, the daughter of the late Esmond and Maybelle Blaylock Bedford.

Mrs. Ashmore is survived by her daughter and son- in- law, Sandra Baldwin ( Charles); son and daughter- i n- l aw, Phillip Ashmore (Beverly); brother, Ferman Bedford (Jeannie); grandchildren, Denise Stil es ( Mike), Greg Ashmore, Brent Ashmore, and Ryan Ashmore (Leah); 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandson.

Mrs. Ashmore is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Ashmore; parents; and brother, Claude Bedford.

The graveside services for Mrs. Lucille Bedford Ashmore were conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Polk Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating.

The family of Mrs. Lucille Bedford Ashmore received f amily and friends on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017 prior to the service hour at the Gammage Funeral Home.

Mr. Earnest Randall Campbell, age 63 of Cartersville f ormerly of Rockmart passed away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017.

Mr. Campbell was born Dec. 4, 1953 in Gadsden, Ala., son of the late Earnest Earl Campbell and the late Nellie Imogene Wallace Campbell. He was a member of the Van Wert Baptist Church and a former employee of the Cartersville Spinning Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Randall Campbell.

Survivors included two daughters, Melissa ( Jason) Stringer and Felicia (Billy) Morris all of Cartersville; sister, Linda Shaw of Cedartown; two brothers, Wade ( Pam) Campbell of Cedartown and Roger Campbell of Rockmart; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mr. John William Dempsey, age 74, of Cedartown, passed away on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 3, 2017 following an extended illness.

He was born on March 26, 1943 in Polk County, the son of Luther Jackson Dempsey and Nell Hopper Dempsey.

Mr. Dempsey was a United States Veteran proudly serving in the U.S. Army in South America during the Vietnam Era. Prior to his retirement he had worked for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in both Cedartown and Cartersville. He retired following 37 dedicated years of service. He was a avid drag racer and loved working on old cars and trucks. He was a member of the Antique Car Club.

Mr. Dempsey was preceded in death by his father, Luther Jackson Dempsey, his mother, Nell Hopper Dempsey and his brother in law, Ray Chandler.

He is survived by his wi f e , C i n d y E s t e s Dempsey and his sister, Sarah Dempsey Chandler. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives also survive.

The Memorial Service for John William Dempsey were conducted on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 7, 2017 at 3 p. m. from the chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with Rev. Reginald Campbell officiating.

Interment followed in the Jackson Chapel Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Brewster-Cleveland Post 86 Honor Guard. The family received friends on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 7, 2017 at the Litesey Funeral Home.

Mr. Landon Scott Sides, age 20, of Cedartown, passed away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017 at Cobb General Hospital, Austell.

Mr. Sides had lived all of his life in the Rockmart and Aragon area.

He was a member of the Wimberly Hill Baptist Church and his hobbies included skateboarding and playing the guitar.

Mr. Sides was preceded in death by grandparents: Joe and Lena Turner, Peggy Mitchell and Diane Sides; by an uncle, Billy Sides and aunt Brenda Ingram.

Survivors include his father, Kevin Sides and wife Tammy, Cedartown; mother, Marenda Waters and husband Jason, Rockmart; s i s t er, Lacey Sides, Rockmart; brother, Christ opher Lane Sides, Cedartown; grandfather, Sam Sides, Cedartown; grandparents, Sue and Noble Waters, Aragon; niece, Oakleigh Sides, Rockmart.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Swift officiating and a eulogy given by Steve Johnson. Interment will follow in the Northview Cemetery, Cedartown.

Mr. Charles V. “Charlie” Hooper, a g e 7 5 , o f Cedartown, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, Sept. 2, 2017 with his family at his side.

Mr. Hooper was born on Sept. 6, 1941 in Polk County the son of William Cleve Hooper and Evie Belle Johnson Hooper.

Mr. Hooper had been employed by Jockey International for many years and he retired following twenty nine dedicated years.

Later, he went to work for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Cartersville and retired following ten years of service.

He was a member of the Caledonia Lodge # 121 F&AM and prior to declining health Mr. Hooper had been a very active member of the Lees Chapel Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Patricia Johnson Hooper in 1996 and by a number of brothers and sisters.

Mr. Hooper is survived by his wife, Carolyn Walker Hooper, his sons and daughters in law, Todd and Dianne Hooper and Gene and Sherri Hooper; his brother, David Hooper; his sisters, Ruby Nell Camp, Ellen Dempsey and Artie Belle McFall and his grandchildren, Blair and Adam Elrod, Connor and Hannah Hooper and Lauren Hooper.

A number of nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Charles V. “Charlie” Hooper were conducted on Monday afternoon, Sept. 4, 2017 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with the Rev. Joey Meeks, The Rev. Billy Vines and Rev. Terry Sims.

Interment followed in t he f amily l ot of t he Northview Cemetery with Masonic Rites conducted by the West Georgia Masonic Club officiating at graveside.

Mrs. Patricia Deems Sanford, age 7 4 , of Rockmart, passed away Friday, Sept. 1, 2017 at her residence.

She was born in Aragon, on June 9, 1943, a daught er of t he l ate Hugh Deems and the late Ruby Ailene Collum Deems.

Mrs. Sanford lived all of her life in the Rockmart area where she was a member of the Victory Baptist Church and a former member of the First Baptist Church of Rockmart.

She was very artistic and enjoyed making homemade cards and crafts. Other favorite hobbies included traveling and gardening.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her i nfant daughter, Jamie Lynette Sanford.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Ralph Sanford of Rockmart, to whom she was married on Aug. 17, 1962; daughter, Regina Nettles, Rockmart; grands o n , Z a c h Nett l e s , Rockmart; three sisters: Mary Ann Mangum, Snellville, Glenda Faye Johnson and her husband David, Rockmart and Doris Wigley and her husband Cecil, Rockmart; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of the Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. David Taylor, Rev. Keith Guyton and Rev. Jimmy Hatcher officiating. Interment followed in the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers included: Daniel Johnson, Derrick Nettles, Mike Clark, Spencer Mangum, Heath Knudson, Ronnie Gray and Dwain Yates.

Mrs. Maudie Sue Spivey Standish, of Cedartown, ( formally Sue Crow of Bennettsville, S.C.) passed away on Sept. 1, 2017, from an extended illness.

Born Jan. 18, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Leo McDuffy Spivey Jr. and Hazel Goude Spivey of Conway, S.C.

Mrs. Standish graduated from Myrtle Beach High School in 1968 and earned an Associate Degree in nursing from Florence- Darlington Tech in 1984.

She is survived by her daughter, Gina Crow Hartness and granddaughter, Eugenia Pringle Hartness of Raleigh, N.C., and sisters, Annelle Spivey Edgar ( Lou) of Buchanan, and Sally Spivey Glass (George) of Piney Creek, N. C. She was preceded in death by brothers, Leo McDuffy ( Mack) Spivey III and Tony John Spivey.

She was an avid equestrian and loved all animals, especially her horse “Little Boy.” She was a passionate nurse who loved her profession.

Mr. Hugh Doyle Teems, Sr., age 81, of Centre, AL passed away Friday, September 1, 2017.

Mr. Joseph Lee Carpenter, age 64, of Fort Payne, Ala., passed away at Erlanger Health System on Sept. 1, 2017.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1953 to Dean and Nell Carpenter.

Mr. Carpenter was retired from Wildcountry Inc. with 30-plus years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a son Jonah Carpenter and a daughter Meg Carpenter.

Mr. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Deborah Kay Carpenter of Fort Payne, Ala., and a son Bart Carpenter of Huntsville, Ala.

Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. at Northview Cemetery in Cedartown. A visitation was held on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 3 in the chapel of Burt Funeral Home in Fort Payne, Ala. with t he Rev. Steve Swafford officiating.

Last year, contractors got underway on a project a long time in the making, and now that building work is done and staff in the county Public Works department have moved in, it can be called complete.

Public Works Director Michael Gravett said that his crew still has some minor finishing touches to do before they can officially call it home, but otherwise he said his department has moved in and already getting down to work.

“We appreciate the efforts that the board of commissioners and our county administration undertook to get us into this fantastic facility,” Gravett said. “We’re going to do some more landscaping in the coming months, but otherwise we’re all in order.”

The $1.4 million facility was started back in October 2016 with less than half a year to finish the work.

The project had been planned for years, but it took county administration officials and commissioners time to figure out how to reduce costs and still provide a useful upgrade for the Public Works department.

Eventually commissioners voted to approve a plan to build a 6-bay facility that includes all new equipment for the department, along with better areas for the department’s office staff and workers.

Gravett said the new equipment alone is making a difference now.

But that’s just one area of improvement with the building, he said.

“One huge benefit for the department that has nothing to do with the brick and mortar of the building — and the employees appreciate a lot — is that helps with the overall morale,” he said. “They appreciate having a nice facility to come to work to everyday, and that in turn will help us in keeping it up in the years to come.”

Along with building a new space for the department, the county commission also approved plans to build a new fuel farm for county vehicles to gas up at before or after a day’s work.

Gravett said the work is all completed on that project as well, with only a few minor items to finish. He added that a first delivery of fuel was expected this week sometime, depending on what happened with Hurricane Irma.

Right now the county has not approved any immediate plans for what to do with the old Public Works facility, but in past sessions when discussing new construction they have all agreed the old building next to the Highway 27 bypass must go.
