Rockmart gets into Region 7-AA play on the road, Sports
Calhoun, Northwest Whitfield end perfect streak for Rockmart softball team.
It finally happened: someone got the better of the Rockmart Lady Jackets softball team.
The 19-2 (10-0 7-AA) Lady Jackets scrapped and fought, but couldn’t overcome Northwest Whitfield on Friday night last week and Cal- houn on Saturday morning in a pair of losses in a tournament on the road as the team heads into the final stretches of the regular season schedule.
Despite an early week delay due to the wet weather, Rockmart took on and defeated Dade County with a 10-2 win on Sept. 14.
The Lady Jackets showed up the first inning with a soft start only gaining one on the score board, but eventually picking it up at the bat as they gain a whopping 5 runs in the third inning then ending the game off with an even ten by gaining five runs in the fourth and fifth inning.
For the most runs around the dirt diamond goes to Emily Loveless who scored two runs for the jackets against Dade.
The Top two for most RBI’s go to Carlee Graham, who had three RBI’s this game, and Cambree Stanley, who followed right behind Graham with two RBIs for the Lady Jackets.
Emily Loveless did a phenomenal job at the pitchers mound against Dade and ended up leaving the game with 14 first pitch strikes, only one strike out, and only gave up two runs up through the entire match.
Coach Steve Luke said that the Lady Jackets are on the road for another region championship.
“Of course the team wants another region championship for our school, we had a very successful year for all sports last year,” said Luke.” We just want to keep doing our part as a team and keep doing what we are doing.”
Though they were able to keep their season perfect through most of the region, they got toppled off the top of the mountain with a pair of losses to bigger teams.
On Friday, Rockmart took a 3- 0 loss to Northwest Whitfield in the first game of their road trip to a Chattanooga-area tournament, but bounced back later in the evening with a 5-4 victory over Lafayette.
Rockmart then took a second shutout loss to Calhoun to start off Saturday play 7-0, followed again by a win over Heritage-Catoosa in a 13-6 finish to their tournament.
The Lady Jackets are back in action at Model after press time on Tuesday, followed by a home stand against Heard County today, and a Thursday road trip to Chattooga County in Summerville.
The r egular s eason rounds out with a final trip to Gordon Central on Sept. 25, and Senior Night at home against Pepperell on Sept. 27.
