Polk County Commission deciding on District 3 candidate

- From staff reports

The Polk County Commission announced late last week that they were going to meet Monday after press time to consider who will take over the seat left open in District 3 ahead of an endof-the-month deadline.

County Manager Matt Denton provided information in an email Friday, along with an agenda for the night with the only item currently up for consideration being the decision of who will fill the District 3 seat, but prior to that commissioners will also go into an executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

Commissioners had three candidates to decide upon to fill the seat left open at the end of August.

Larry Reynolds, Hal Floyd and Tim Yarbrough all still remain as potential choices.

If the Commission brings a vote up but fails to get a 4-1 vote on any of the three candidates, they’ll be allowed to vote as many times as they can call meetings up through an Oct. 29 deadline. Following that, the Polk County Board of Elections would then adver- tise the position for a month before handing the decision over to the Grand Jury to vote on the next commissioner.

In September, commissioners vote unanimously to approve the appointment of Jose Iglesias to fill the rest of the term for the District 1 seat left open by former Commissioner Jason Ward.

The Rockmart area seat was left open by former Commissioner Stefanie Drake Burford has most of the term she was re-elected to serve on in 2016 left to go. The appointment will last the rest of that term.
