LEAD Polk stops by Gold Dome for tour

- Contributed by Blair Elrod

LEAD Polk took to the Capitol on Thursday, Oct. 19, to tour the iconic building where the State Senate and House of Representatives meet each year.

Our group was treated to touring the building’s historic collection of portraits and museums. Items from Georgia’s history lined the walkways as we learned about the rich past that has brought us to the state we call “home” today. From the recognizable gold dome with Miss Freedom to the exhibits filled with blue prints for the future of Georgia, LEAD Polk was educated on the state’s remark- able founding as a colony, its’ role in the civil rights era as well as the recent cultivation of the film industry, as Georgia is named the “second Hollywood.”

The group also met Secretary of State, and Governor candidate, Brian Kemp before returning to Polk County for a Lunch and Learn with Andy Camp, Vice President of Nextsite.

Nextsite, a company that communities collaborate with, brings forth unparalleled research, market analysis and mapping support to assist in the identification of real estate and retail opportunities that have significant impact on cities and counties. The group learned tools and techniques to help foster downtown development and cultivate retail growth that adds value to stakeholders and residents.

The LEAD Polk Class of 2017 will participate in two more classes sessions: Leading Community Change as well as a session devoted to touring the healthcare facilities of Polk County, before graduating on Thursday, November 9th. If you are interested in applying for the LEAD Polk Class of 2018, please contact the President of the Development Authority, Missy Kendrick at 678-971-3095 or by e-mail at missykendrick@ polkgeorgia.com.
