4-H students score big at Cottonboll

A group of Polk County 4-H students took top spots among others in the area during the annual District Cottonboll and Consumer Judging Jamboree in Acworth.

The Oct. 30 event saw 13 juniors and seniors compete during with other 4-Her’s around the region, where students were scored on their ability to identify and provide information on various areas of cotton’s role in agriculture and consumer decision making.

Polk’s senior team took a sixth place finish, with Victoria Barrett getting an individual spot in the Top 10 on her own. The junior team finished in fifth place, with Anna Prince also getting a Top 20 spot.

The Cottonboll and Consumer Judging Jamboree is an event centered around 4-Her’s knowledge of cotton as an agricultural commodity, promoting growth in communities around the state and making knowledgeable, rational decisions when purchasing goods and services, among other objectives.

Junior 4-H’ers — those in the sixth through eighth grades — prepared a poster that promotes cotton and use that poster in presenting a 30 second cotton commercial.

Senior 4-H’ers — students in the ninth through 12th grades — prepared and presented a 90 second Public Service Announcement about cotton.

To get ready for the Cottonboll and Consumer Judging Jamboree, the 4- H’ers attended 6 training classes to learn about bathrobes, wearable technology, protein bars, sleeping bags and cotton generally.

Each class also provided facts about the products to help the 4-H’ers to become better consumers.

Polk County was represented by Victoria Barrett, Ezekiel Smith, Anna Prince, Makenzie Droege, Joseph Croker, Edward McAlister, Minnes Smith, Shawna Rocha, Nytie Govern, Kira Peterson, Alan Rocha, Dakota Peterson and Grace Prince.
