Rockmart basketball programs kick off season with Paulding scrimmage

- From staff reports The Rockmart Lady Jackets kicked off their season with a scrimmage win at Paulding County last week.

The chilly months of indoor sports have officially arrived, and the Rockmart Yellow Jackets are getting back into the rhythm of round ball for the 2017-18 season.

The Jackets boys and girls basketball program is back in action, having traveled last week for their first pair of games in Paulding County on Nov. 14 to face the Patriots and Lady Patriots for an preseason scrimmage.

It was the first time back on the court for a number of Jacket athletes, who participated in fall sports activities that wound down after playoffs this week.

Even though the scrimmage didn’t count, the Lady Jackets came away with a win, while the boys will need to work a little harder ahead of the season and region opener at Coosa on Nov. 28.

Here’s a brief rundown of where the pair of programs sit as the season is set to get underway this coming week against the Eagles:

It was the first time on the court after a summer of building chemistry for what remains a young Rockmart Lady Jacket basketball team, and the were able to come away with a 20-plus point win over the Paulding County Lady Patriots on Nov. 14.

The win didn’t count on their record, but it gave head coach Tim Puckett an idea of what he hopes will be a productive and strong team for the 201718 season. Puckett said he has three seniors on the team this year and he’ll be relying on the experience of Kesley Motes, Madison Davis and Desiree Williamson to lead a squad of juniors, sophomores and freshmen filling the ranks on the court and in the bench.

“We’re still very much a young team, but we had a great off-season during the summer and developed a lot of chemistry,” Puckett said. “I believe that is going to go a long way into helping us grow and win this season.”

They open their season and the region against Coosa on Tuesday, Nov. 28, and then play at Bowdon on Dec. 1, Adairsville on Dec. 2 and return to region play on Dec. 5 hosting Chattooga.

There’s work to be done on the court for the Rockmart Yellow Jackets boys program, who are just now getting back to a full compliment in practice and for upcoming games.

KICK The NASCAR season was finally coming to a close after press time on Sunday afternoon in the EcoBoost 400 in South Florida, capping off a wild run for the 2017 season.
