Man facing charges in string of burglaries
ROME — A Rome man was in jail without bond Saturday night after being accused of committing at least seven burglaries at businesses and a school from January to March that resulted in $9,267.03 in items taken.
According to Floyd County Jail reports: Patrick Roderequiz Smith, 36, of 207 E. 14th St., was arrested Friday. The string of burglaries began Jan. 1. He broke a front door window at Rick’s Little Garden, 1901 Dean Ave. Once inside the convenience store, he took an assortment of lottery tickets valued at $1,000.
Three days later on Jan. 4, he burglarized three businesses in the same day. He smashed front door windows at Sorelle Salon & Spa of Rome and Abundant Living Counseling of Rome at a strip mall at 701 E. Second Ave. From Sorelle Salon, he took miscellaneous beauty tools, a Samsung Note cellphone, a laptop, an iPad Mini, and a coffee maker, amassing a value of $3,754 — he also took $200. From Abundant Living Counseling, he took a small TV valued at $20 and miscellaneous checks.
The third business he hit that day was Safe Storage at 45 Rogers Drive. He broke a side window at the business and went on to take keys, an LCD TV, jewelry, checks and a money clip. He also took $907.39 along with the cash drawer, cash lock box, and a bank bag. All together the value of what he took was $2,218.03. On Jan. 31, he broke a side window at Montessori School of Rome, 165 Dodd Blvd., and took $1,225 and a business checkbook from inside. He hit Right at Home, a home health care service, Feb. 27, breaking a front window to get inside. He took five credit cards, blank payroll checks, an iPad Mini, and $300. All together what was taken was valued at $680.
Quick Tire and Lube was his next target, as he took $370 in items from the business at 2 Riverbend Drive on March 4. He broke a front window and stole bank cards, checkbooks, a gun, a trash can, two vehicle titles and several bottles of wine. Smith had a run-in with police three days after this incident when an officer saw him prowling around an Elliott Drive home around 1:30 a.m. He fought and wrestled with the officer after he was confronted, but eventually was able to get free and fled.
Smith is charged with six counts of felony first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree criminal damage to property, and one count second-degree burglary. He is additionally charged with felony entering an automobile with intent to commit a theft or felony, obstruction of an officer and aggravated assault on an officer in performance of duties. He also is charged with six counts of misdemeanor criminal trespass.
