Murder-suicide claims 2 people in Rockmart
A Polk County man died amid a brief police chase on Highway 278 near Coot’s Lake Road near Rockmart following the Thanksgiving weekend.
According to Polk County Deputy Coroner Marty Robinson, Tandy Borders, 44 of a Second Street address in Rockmart died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head late Sunday night, Nov. 26.
Robinson said that Borders had already told authorities he was suicidal, and was alleged to have committed a murder in Cobb County prior to his coming back to Polk County and death.
Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd said his officers first received a call to be on the lookout for Borders late Sunday night, and were initially dispatched to a Prospect Road church where Borders was believed to be at the time. However, a Rockmart police officer was able to obtain a phone number for Borders and the two got in touch while he was still on his way back to Polk County.
Police later encountered Borders’ vehicle around 11 p.m. near Coot’s Lake Road and attempted to stop him. Borders turned onto McDowell Road and shot himself before the car came to an uncontrolled stop.
Dodd said initial reports that he had confessed to the murder of his girlfriend in Cobb County were unconfirmed, and that his officers received that information from a friend who called 911 to inform officials Borders was suicidal.
Later in the day, Cobb County confirmed that Borders had alleged to have shot and killed a woman i n Powder Springs. Police later identified her as 34-year-old Dally-Ogbebor Omoisgho of an unidentified African nation. The family was notified after police them down on Nov. 28.
According to police accounts, officers at 2205 Manatee Court in Powder Springs where they found a dead woman in the yard with a gunshot wound.
After investigation police reported that Borders and t he woman knew each other but were just acquaintances. Borders immediately fled the scene after the shooting around 10 p.m.
