For local councils, it’s back to work

The holidays are finally done, and with it the business of a new year gets underway for local government­s who will be getting back to work starting this coming week for the first meetings of 2018.

Officials from Cedartown, Rockmart, Polk County and the School Board are all back to business for the start of the year this coming week with meetings for 2018.

Cedartown will kick off the year by getting to swear in returning commission­ers and a new member during the Jan. 8 regular session. Jessica Brewster Payton will get to take her seat after being sworn in along with incumbents Matt Foster and Jordan Hubbard for the opening meeting of the new year for Cedartown.

The board will also move to vote for a chair and vice chair for the year, and will undertake new business items as needed. An agenda for the meeting was available at press time over the weekend. Commission­ers will gather at 6 p.m. at city hall for the session, and it is open to the public.

The Polk County Commission also gets back to work this coming Monday evening with their first work session of 2018, and will be back to work for their regular meeting for January the following night during a 7 p.m. session on Tuesday at the commission meeting room at the Polk County Police Department.

Agendas were also not immediatel­y available over the weekend.

The Rockmart City Council and the school board is also set to meet as of press time for their Jan. 9 meetings as well. The Board of Education is set for their regular meeting at 6 p.m. at the board meeting room at the Polk School District central office on South College Street in Cedartown.

Rockmart council members meet at City Hall on North Piedmont Avenue starting at 7 p.m.
