The 13th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Walk and Celebration is coming up on Monday, Jan. 15, 218 starting at 1:30 p.m., with the walk set to start at the corner of Thompson and Rock Street and continue down to Polk County Courthouse No. 2. Guest Speaker Rev. Sam Mosteller, candidate for Superintendent of Schools for the state, and special guest and host St. Luke Baptist Church and Rev, Khryi Rogers, will be on hand. Hot chili will be served at the Turner Street Center following the walk. The annual walk is organized by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Organization of Cedartown.

This Saturday, Jan. 6, Keep Polk Beautiful invites everyone to bring their Christmas tree to the Polk/Haralson Christian Center at 3900 Antioch Road, Cedartown, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tree seedlings, free flower packets, and a free petting zoo provided by The Cook Farm will be on site for the event.

The next West Georgia Spay/Neuter Clinic is coming to the Cedartown-Polk County Humane Society on Wednesday, Jan. 10 after the start of the new year. Head over to the organization’s office at 608 Adamson Road, Cedartown, on Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. or Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to fill out an admission and prepay for the surgery. The next spaghetti dinner at the American Legion Post 12 will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2017. Meal is spaghetti, meatballs, garlic toast and salad, $5 all-you-can-eat. Best $5 meal anywhere.

Mark your calendars now for Feb. 10 for the Cedartown Optimist Club’s Ham and Egg Day at the Goodyear Recreation Center at 108 Prior St. Tickets are $7.50 each. Money raised goes to the development of local youth groups. Tickets can be purchased from a Cedartown Optimist Club member, or at the door.

A Winter Bazaar is coming to the Cherokee Golf and Country Club in Cedartown on Feb. 24 at 150 Club Drive from 8 a.m. to noon. Items for sale will include jewelry, baked and canned goods, wardrobe accessories and home decor. Vendor applications are being accepted, but a limited number of tables are for rent. The Paris Mountain Bridal Show is coming up on Saturday, Feb. 3 being hosted at Sweet Meadows Farms at 111 Beech Creek Road in Tallapoosa. The event includes a free tour of the farm, food tastings, wedding professionals, swag bags, door prizes and more. The free event goes from 1 to 5 p.m.

Applications for will be taken starting Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, for assistance with power bills from the Rockmart-Aragon United Fund in the Rockmart Municipal Complex at 214 N. Piedmont Ave., Rockmart, from opening hours until 2 p.m. Only those Rockmart-area (including Aragon and East Polk) Georgia Power customers seeking help can apply, and are required to bring their most recent power bill and social security cards for all members of a household including children. Applicants must show up in person to request information and fill out forms. Bills must be 10 days past due and have at least two charges on them before being considered. Rules and guidelines will be followed, and there is no guarantee of help for Rockmart area customers, but the organization will consider all applicants from the Rockmart area.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cedartown, Georgia, hosts a genealogy group that meets from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday nights, except holidays. There are no fees for these sessions and they are open to anyone. Please bring all of your basic family history (if you have it) such as names, birth-dates/death dates of parents, grandparents, children, etc. Bring your laptop or tablet, if you have one. Victory Baptist Church’s Bread of Life Food Pantry is now open. Celebrate Recovery continues to meet in the First Baptist Church of Rockmart, 311 E. Elm St., on Monday nights with dinner at 6 p.m. A large group gathers at 7 p.m., and small share group gathers at 8 p.m.

Lutheran Services of Georgia’s Heritage Adoption Program partners with DFCS to find Forever Families for children waiting in Georgia’s foster care system. Information Sessions are held on the third Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. at the Rome Office, located at 336 Broad St., Suite 200. Soup and “Savior,” a local nonprofit organization, meets from 6 to 7 p. m. Tuesdays to provide needed items to deserving people. This includes a free meal (soup), clothing and gives other assistance. On Nov. 1, 2017, Tallatoona CAP began accepting appointments for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for Senior Households 65 and older and Homebound Households. Appointments for the General Public began Dec. 1, 2017. Appointments will be provided on a first-come first-served basis until assistance funds are exhausted. Polk County residents who qualify will receive either $ 310.00 or $ 350.00 toward their heating bill (heating source).
