Rockmart teams hit with losses after extra time off

- From staff reports

Cancellations at the beginning of last week for winter weather have caused a bit of trouble with the schedule, but the Jackets and Lady Jackets were back on track by the weekend, though their games weren’t.

Both teams took losses on the road at Cass on Saturday after getting back to business following the break due to winter weather.

The Lady Jackets took a 69-60 loss on the road, holding onto a big first half lead after going up 21-9 during the opening quarter and holding onto a slim lead heading into the locker room as the Lady Colonels came storming back during the second quarter.

Cass outscored Rockmart 24-14 during the third quarter, and 18-13 in the second to take a 69-60 win over the Lady Jackets to round out the weekend. It was the first game back for Rockmart following last week’s winter storm, forcing games to be called off on Tuesday at Gordon Central.

Friday games scheduled at Chattooga were also postponed.

The same story for the Jackets, who took a 10-point 53-43 loss on the road after returning to work.

Both teams will have a chance at redemption as they face Pepperell at home after press time on Tuesday evening, followed by Gordon Central on Thursday in a make-up game for last week on t he road and then coming back to host Dade County on Friday evening.

The Jackets, sitting at 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the region, are in fourth place as of press time in 7-AA basketball with Chattooga still undefeated at 8- 0 in the top spot, followed by a tie between Pepperell and Dade County for second and third place at 5-3 in region play.

Rockmart’s girls stand at 11-6 on the season with only a few more weeks to go, with a 5-2 region record at second place in 7-AA play only trailing behind a dominating Model team, who stands at 9-0 in region play and 15-3 on the season. Armuchee stands in third place and Chattooga in fourth at press time.

No immediate information was available about a reschedule for the missed Chattooga region games at press time.
