Cedartown finishes regular season with big wins
It’s time for the region tournament as both the Cedartown boys and girls team finish in fifth place after the finish of the regular season with wins over Chapel Hill on senior night.
Both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs also finished even in region play at 6-6 a piece, with the both teams also finishing 12-11 for the regular season overall.
However, the boys and girls got to show off just what they are made of during routs at home to close out the regular season for senior night and wrap up region play before heading into the region tournament this week, with one special play hit just before the night was over by a senior star soon to head off to Kentucky. (See Page B3 for more on Trevon Wofford’s commitment.)
More than likely, both teams will fall just short of the playoffs after finishing the weeks with wins.
Nevertheless, the teams provided a lot of excitement during senior night to wrap up their final three games of the season, one of those a make-up from a missed trip to Chapel Hill during winter weather.
Here’s a rundown of how the week went for the boys and girls:
Bulldogs go 2-1 through regular season’s end
It started off as a good week for the Bulldogs basketball program, picking up a road win at Chapel Hill on Jan. 29 in a 53-48 finish over the Panthers, but then had to travel again on Jan. 30 to fall hard at Sandy Creek in a 72-39 loss.
Where the Bulldogs really shined was on senior night.
During the fourth quarter, the boys got to show off their talents with a poster shot of a play between senior Trevon Wofford and junior Zahquan Frazier, hitting a picture-perfect alley-oop on the basket, which was one of many big plays during the final night in the Doghouse.
Wofford hit 12 points on the night overall, teaming up in double digits with 14 points for Jeremiah Johnson and 13 for senior T.J. Martin.
“This was one of the best games ever, and I’m glad to be a Bulldog and leave it all out on the court,” Wofford said postgame. “We had our up and downs this season but that is just the good and the bad, which is just a part of basketball.”
Head coach Benjie Frazier said the final regular season game was a moment where the Bulldogs shined through a tough year.
“It was senior night and all the kids played hard for four quarters and played as a team looking for the open man. That’s why we came out on top,” Frazier said “Its been a pleasure coaching these kids for the last four years these seniors are great humble kids and they will be missed.”
Lady Bulldogs finish season strong
The Cedartown Lady Bulldogs put together a successful senior night, put up a 54- 37 win over the visiting Lady Panthers in the final regular season matchup before the start of the Region Tournament.
They finished the week 2-1 after picking up another win on Jan. 29 against Chapel Hill in a closer 53-44 win, but dropped a road trip contest at Sandy Creek to the Lady Patriots 57-20.
Last Friday’s fight against the Lady Panthers was full of energy as Keke Turner put up 13 points, Tamera Beeman ended the night with 24 points, and Qiana Watson added 8 points.
Recently Head Coach Eddie Gambrell has been working with his squad in the prior days the regular season’s end on their tempo game and fine tuning the offense.
“I though the girls played really well, they came out really aggressive tonight,” Gambrell said. “The girls came out here with the right mindset and is one of the best games we had for four Quarters. this is a special night for our seniors and i told them, you kind of owe it to the seniors to go out and play your best and tonight I can say they all did.”
