Rockmart wraps up regular season on top
Both teams secure second place in 7-AA and will likely to head to the playoffs.
Rockmart has a good chance to make a run into the playoffs this year as both teams sit in second place in the region as the regular season comes to an end and the Region 7-AA tournament starts this week.
That’s right, the Jackets are sitting in high cotton as the girls have a 11-3 region record and 18- 7 overall, while the boys finished at 9-5 (15-10 overall) behind Chattooga, who they beat to cap off play this weekend.
Both teams are also all but guaranteed to host the first round of the Class AA state tournament when it starts in the weeks to come as well.
Until then, it is a waiting game for the Jacket and Lady Jackets as they play through another round of games fighting for spots in 7-AA play this week, which also means no rest for a team that put up four games last week.
The Lady Jackets finished their run through the end of regular season region play at 3-1, falling to the Model Lady Blue Devils in a 61-40 loss to start off play on Jan. 30.
Head Coach Tim Puckett’s squad turned the ship through the rest of the week, picking up a 5044 win over Pepperell on Feb. 1, then a huge senior night win over Armuchee in the last seconds, 51-48.
Senior Madison Davis was the hero as the Lady Indians fought their way back in the fourth quarter and tied up the score in the last minute, both teams trading three point shots right up until the final seconds.
Davis hit the perfect three-pointer as the clock ticked down from four seconds to cap off the night, and her team rushed the court to surround the night’s hero.
The Lady Jackets capped off the season with a 68- 60 win over Chattooga on the road to close out region play heading into this week’s tournament.
Meanwhile, the boys also went 3-1 to finish out region play, starting off the week with wins over Model (62-60,) but dropping their Feb. 1 game to Pepperell on the road by 3 (57-50.)
The Jackets made up for it to finish off the season, grabbing a 65-49 win over the Indians on Senior Night to cap off the excitement and fanfare of the final home game, and then beat Chattooga in a 57-50 win to stun the No. 1 team in the region heading into the 7- AA tournament.
Model High School will play host to teams from around the area starting this week to determine a region champion.
