Partygoers get red-carpet treatment

- By Sean Williams SJ Correspondent

Prom night came early in the year for a worldwide celebration, and Polk County took part in that celebration during celebrations that included 90,000 globally.

Second Baptist Church of Cedartown and volunteers put out the red car- pets and crowds cheered on as the annual “Night to Shine” prom gave every attendee a chance to be an MVP.

Created and sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, the prom was hosted in 540 churches in 16 counties, and the scale of the event continues to grow alongside the participants.

“It’s got the perfect name,” Eastside Elementary Principal and volunteer Wesley Cupp said. “It gives them a night to shine. For them to get that experience. It’s about them getting the spotlight, and we have so many people that step up to help. It’s incredible.”

Staff welcomed the at- tendees into the building before numerous volunteers worked to doll up the partygoers. Hair was styled, shoes were shined, and tuxedos and dresses were fitted to make guests ready for their paparazzi-filled red carpet walk that led to a dance.

Limo rides were also offered, and a party bus was present to make sure attendees were enjoying themselves in the dance hall or outside.

“I do feel special,” guest Sierra Parker said. “I really like my tiara.”

The dance hall was home to neon lights, roaring music, and a variety of dance moves as the guests made their red carpet debut. Before long, everyone had someone to dance alongside.

“It’s an amazing experience, and this is the most special night. I’ve worked in special needs for 10 years, and I still remember them,” volunteer Stephanie Nesbitt said.

A feast was waiting for any hungry attendees, and medical booths and other safety measures were prepared and ready during the event, and the sheer amount of volunteers present made “Night to Shine” run smoothly.

“We’ve helped out with some of the tents and supplied first aid,” Redmond EMS director Marty Robinson said. “It takes a lot of work organizing, but it came together. It takes a lot of community.”

“I had an opportunity to come last year,” State Rep. Trey Kelley said. “It shows us what community is about. I appreciate all the volunteers that come out to make it a great event.”

At “Night to Shine,” everyone was elected prom king or queen. The event saw hundreds of confident faces wearing their best.

Parents and caretakers were given a chance to relax during the night as well with meals and massages, along with a comedy show while their loved ones partied in the sanctuary at Second Baptist. Guardians were welcome to watch their children get crowned and walk the carpet, but the improved, much larger venue, comedy show, and meals gave them something to do while their dependents were off partying.

The Feb. 9 prom honored those with special needs whether young or old. A very inclusive event, those interested can find more information and sign up for next year’s event at https://www.timtebowfoundation.org/ministries/night-to-shine.
