- From staff reports

Local students are once again big winners after taking part in the 2018 District Project Achievement in past weeks at Georgia Highlands College.

Fifth and Sixth graders from across the district took part in the Feb. 3 event, giving a four to six minute presentation on a subject, honing their public speaking skills and improving their selfconfidence overall.

Polk County’s 4-H Club sent 18 students who competed alongside 600 other 4-H students from 12 different counties in the Northwest District, and was the highest level of competition for the Cloverleaf 4-H group.

Several students also walked away with awards for their speeches during the month-opening event.

Those included second place finishes for Eastside Elementary fifth grader Callie Ensley on health, and Westside fifth grader Mylashia Robinson on public speaking.

Sixth graders Clinton Parker from Rockmart Middle School on took second computer information technology, along with Toby Harcourt who provided information on wildlife. Cedartown Middle School sixth grader Luis Cornejo also scored a second place spot for his presentation on plants, soils and fertilizer.

Polk s t udents also brought home two third place awards, one for Eastside fifth grader Julie Thomas’ presentation on crafts, and one for sixth grader Edward McAlister for his presentation on Computer Information Technology.

The Polk County Extension Office and 4-H program officials extended their congratulations to the students who placed this year and all those 18 who participated, and also thanked several adult volunteers for their help as well.

Stephen Ely and Shannon Williams took part as adult volunteers, and teen leaders for the day included senior 4-H’ers Zoey Myrick, who judged; Grace Prince, Nytie Govern, Dalton Ely, Nolan Ensley, Alan Rocha and Victoria Barrett and Robert Fennell.

The 4-H program locally is headed up by agents Crystal Hollis and Dora Williams, the County Extension Program Assistants for 4-H Youth, and Ricky Ensley, County Extension Coordinator.
