Black History Month parade is set to roll

- By Sean Williams SJ Correspondent

Local residents are encouraged to come participate in an annual parade meant to honor those who have made an impact on Polk County and beyond during Black History Month.

Beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, the numerous floats, cars, and festivities planned to circulate downtown Rockmart will make the parade’s fifth anniversary one for the books.

“We’re going with last year’s theme,” Organizer Vanessa Holmes said. “Black history honoring the journey. We welcome any group or organization that promotes unity to come celebrate with us. There is an application fee of $25, which is used for administration, scholarship, and any organization that is supporting the community.”

Those interested in joining the parade can call Holmes at 404-859-1005. Attendees are urged to prepare floats and designs that speak to black history and the trials and successes of African-Americans.

Historical figures remain a popular choice for the parade, but there’s nothing against telling personal stories of endearment with one’s float.

Those sticking to the role of spectator can join in the rally being held at the Rockmart City Hall complex at 316 N. Piedmont Ave.

“Last year, recipient Turner Street Tutors program, the Helen Fredrick Scholarship, and MLK Community Relations all received $200 in do- nations,” Holmes said.

As the previously selected individual fell ill, the parade regretfully lacks a Grand Marshal. The group is still seeking a good fit. Those interested may also contact Holmes.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of African-American achievements and a time to remember the role blacks have played in history.

Since 1976, each U.S. president has designed February Black History Month. The celebration has picked up traction on a national level with countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom celebrating annually.

‘We’re going with last year’s theme. Black history honoring the journey. We welcome any group or organization that promotes unity to come celebrate with us.’
