GHC men get by with 82-80 win against South Ga. Tech

The Georgia Highlands men’s basketball team made the long trip to Americus and came away with a hard-fought 82-80 win over the Jets of South Georgia Tech.

The Chargers got off to a fast start opening the game on 15-5 run but the Jets came roaring back to tie the game at the 8-minute mark of the first half. Both teams traded baskets with the Jets taking a 40-38 lead into the second half.

South Georgia Tech controlled the game most of the second half leading by as many as eight points midway through the second half, but GHC keep t he game within reach. The Chargers found themselves down by one, 80-79 with 14 seconds left in regulation. the Chargers in-bounded the ball and found an open Khalyl Watters slicing to the basket for a layup to put the Chargers up 81-80 with 6.4 second left. South Georgia Tech had one last attempt and it fell short. DeMarcus Addie added a foul shot to extend lead to 82- 80 and seal the win.

“TaJuan Johnson had a monster second half scoring 15 points and controllin­g the game,”said Charger head coach Phill Gaffney. “This was a great win in a tough environmen­t.”

Johnson led and D’Andre Bernard each scored 15 points, Khalyl Watters scored 14, and Shae Brown scored 11.

The Chargers (16-7, 9-1) will play again today at home against South Georgia State at 7:30 p.m.

South Georgia Tech women 70, Georgia

Highlands 43

The Georgia Highlands women’s basketball team fell to the Lady Jets of South Georgia Tech 7043 on Saturday.

The Lady Chargers fought hard to take a 1514 lead after the 1st period.

Both teams traded baskets with South Georgia Tech taking a 27-26 lead into the half. The Lady Jets took control of the game early in the second half extending their lead to 11 points, 49-38.

South Georgia Tech held the Lady Chargers to only 5 points in the fourth period to close out the win.

The Lady Chargers were led by Ozahria Fisher with 22 points.

GHC ( 15- 12, 10- 5) will play again Friday on the road against Andrew College at 5:30 p.m.
