Weather mixes up Rockmart schedule

Things don’t always go as planned when it comes to the early season games on the schedule for baseball. That rang true for the Rockmart baseball program this week, after they had to postpone a pair of games this week, but got one in to start off the 2018 schedule.

Unfortunately for the Jackets, the season didn’t start out the way they hoped.

Rockmart took a 3-2 loss on the road at Cass last Thursday during a patch of clear and warm weather near week’s end, and headed into a Monday contest on the road at Woodland after press time before they get a chance to host several games this weekend.

The Jackets defense kept the game scoreless through the first three innings, then the offense got a run in the top of the fourth, and held out during the bottom of the inning.

Then Cass’ offense seized opportunity and put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead.

Rockmart came back with another run to tie in the sixth, but couldn’t keep the Colonels off the bags and pushed in the go-ahead run. Cass then held the Jackets in the seventh to close out the game.

The season was supposed to start against Paulding County on Feb. 13, but rainy weather forced that game to be called off and moved to much later in the season amid region play on April 9.

Rockmart’s trip to Cedartown on Friday was also pushed back due to the boys and girls basketball teams taking part in state playoff games, and thus leaving head coach Kenny Yanzetich slightly short- handed as the winter sports continues into postseason for a second week.

The Jackets will get to host Cedartown on Feb. 27 before the make-up game comes along later in March, and in the meantime they’ll have a slate of games ahead to get them ready for the rivalry game at home.

Thomasville will come to the Rock on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. game, then a split morning-evening contest will see the Jackets play Heard County at 10 a.m., then Rabun County at 7 p.m. this Saturday.
