Donations are sought for school cleanup

A Rockmart elementary school is looking to improve the exterior look of their campus and also provide an important lesson for students about nature and life in the process.

Eastside Elementary School principal Wesley Cupp is hoping the community will step up and help with a landscaping project he’s planning for the front of the school coming up on April 27.

He’s already working with staff from Exceed Landscapes — including his brother — to work on a plan for the Earth Day- inspired beautification work on the front lawn and playground areas.

Right now, the project is still in the planning stages and Cupp is seeking help from other landscaping companies who might be willing to donate their time and helping hands with the coming work, but also needs donations of money and materials to make it all work out.

He’s specifically seeking an extra pine straw, mulch, flowers and other items common in gardening and landscaping to make the front of the campus look better.

Cupp’s additional intention is to use the project as a valuable lesson for third through fifth graders about how natural processes work in real life, like photosynthesis with the new plants, and also keeping those plants alive.

He also sees it as an opportunity to teach a valuable lesson about keeping the community clean.

The initial idea was to hold an event on Earth Day itself, but the calendar didn’t cooperate since it is being celebrated on Sunday, April 22.

He pushed it back to Friday, April 27 to allow for students and the community to take part together during the school day as a way to also celebrate the end of annual statewide testing.
