Lady Jackets play strong in region opener vs. Pepperell

- By Tyler Williams

Rockmart’s soccer program is keeping their heads held high as the girls continue a hot run and the boys look to regroup following a hard start to last week at home.

The girls were up first in the program’s region opener against Pepperell, taking a 4-2 win over the Lady Dragons following a tough first half that ended in a 1-all tie.

Montana Barber and Ashlyn Jay showed off their ball control skills with great touches, some beautiful crosses in between the players, and the girls even showed off with a header into the net.

Barber put in a single one goal for the Lady Jackets, but Jay had the best evening of all on the roster with 3 goals against the Lady Dragons.

“I think we came out a little sluggish in the first half, but it’s been a pretty day outside so lets be honest if its a pretty day outside your focus is not going to be there,” said Coach James Schroeder, “But we hunkered down in the second half and tacted down some goals. we did what we wanted to and played our style or let anything else affect us and that’s what wonus the game.”

The boys came out next to play for the second half of the evening during a busy night on the Rockmart campus, however they didn’t have the luck the Lady Jackets did against Pepperell.

Rockmart fought, but came up well short in a 11-1 loss to the Dragons.

No one likes to lose, especially how we lost tonight, but is a lot of good thing we can take away from this game. This is the first time Rockmart has scored on Pepperell in two or three years.” said Coach Alan Pledger, “We are doing many of things with the kids and they are taking the coaching and understanding the concepts we are teaching them and they know what we expect out of them and they are putting it on the field.”

Due to the weather and the snow storms earlier in 2018 the soccer program’s time was cut short and the kids did not get as much time as they normally do to prepare for the season.

The girls now stand at 3-0 in the early season, while the boys sit at 1-3 as of the latest information available at press time.

Rockmart was set to play Dade County last Friday in a trip up to Trenton, but no score was available at press time for either team.

Each are back on the field this evening at home to host Armuhcee, with the boys starting first at 5 p.m. followed by the Lady Jackets at 7 p.m.

Rockmart then travels on Thursday to Summerville to play Chattooga County with 6 and 8 p.m. starts, with the girls taking the field first.

On March 13, the team plays at Pepperell, followed by Model on March 16.
