Big week for Jackets in region play

Rockmart starts with 2-0 play in the region and is tied with Dade County for 7-AA lead in baseball.

- From staff reports

Rockmart had a big week to start off region play in 7-AA baseball, moving to an early 2-0 start against area foes and going 3-1, with another busy stretch ahead for the Jackets.

The hero late in the week was Dylan Bailey, who put up a 4-RBI performance over Gordon Central last Friday and then followed that up on Saturday with a walk-off 2-run homer to grab a weekend win over Berrien in Dallas at Paulding County High School.

Bailey’s at-bats capped off a big week for the Rockmart Yellow Jackets, who moved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the region, tied early for first place with Dade County.

It came after the Jackets started the week off with a loss to the Woodland Wildcats on Monday, March 5 in a 6-0 shutout on the road. Following that, the Jackets went three in a row, only allowing for five runs over three games while outscoring opponents with 29 runs total.

Rockmart won over Model in a 12-2 rout at home, scoring early over the Blue Devils with a trio of runs in the bottom of the first and second innings, then adding a run in the third, four in the fourth inning and one more in the bottom of the fifth before umpires called the game since the Jackets had 10 runs up before the sixth inning began.

That Wednesday win got the Jackets rolling on for the rest of the week.

Hosting again on Friday night, the Jackets took a 13-1 win over Gordon Central in their second win of the week in region play. A full scorebook wasn’t available at press time to break down the game.

Over last weekend against Berrie non Paulding County’s field in a morning game, Rockmart held off the Rebels and Bailey’s homer broke a 2-2 tie and ended the game with the Jackets win.

Rockmart has a busy week ahead again, with a trip to Dade County in store for the next region game on Tuesday after press time, followed by a home game on Friday against Chattooga.

On Saturday, the Jackets host Social Circle for a double header starting at 1 and 4 p.m.
