Planting your spring garden on Good Friday

- By Ricky Ensley Polk County Extension Coordinator

I come from a place where my family planted their spring garden on Good Friday. We planted our garden on Good Friday because my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother had always planted on that date. I was allowed to skip school if the school system had not scheduled Good Friday as a holiday. My mother would say the school system should know that Good Friday is for planting.

We would plant our entire spring garden on Good Friday. Now that I am an Agriculture and Natural Resource Agent, I do realize we were off on some of our planting dates. We wonder why we had trouble with the bugs eating our cool season vegetables.

I would like to give you the spring plant and dates recommended from the University of Georgia Extension Horticulturists.

You will be informed that we should not be planting all vegetables on Good Friday, March 30, 2018.

Here are some common vegetable planting dates: Bean, bush - April 1 - May 1 Bean, pole - April 1 - May 1 Cabbage - Jan. 15 - March 15 Carrot -Jan. 15 - March 20 Corn - March 15 - June 1 Cucumber - April 1 - May 15 Lettuce - Jan. 15 - March 1 Okra - April 1 - June 1 Irish potato - Jan. 15 - March 1 Sweet potato - April 15 - June 15

Squash, bush - April 1 - May 15

Tomato - March 25 - May 1

We have a home gardening brochure that is very helpful with planting dates, dates to maturity, depth to plant, etc. For a copy go to the website extension.uga.edu and go under publications or contact us at 770749-2142 or uge2233@uga.edu for a copy.

Good luck and good gardening!
