Jackets keep up winning streak

Rockmart sits atop the region standings as the team moves to 4-0 in 7-AA play.

- From staff reports

Rockmart’s Dylan Bailey capped off what was a good week for the Rockmart baseball club.

Already the team had won against probably the toughest region foe they’ll face all season to remain undefeated in 7-AA with a 8-4 win over Dade County.

Then Bailey knocked a grand slam homer over the fence against Chattooga, which cleared the Jackets bench as the team celebrated the big swing when Bailey arrived at home plate in the second inning, midway through a 10-run shutout against the Indians at home.

Follow that up with an unexpected break due to the weather as a double header against Social Circle got called off following a Saturday morning downpour last weekend, and the Jackets end their latest run getting to feel pretty good about their successes, and time off.

Rockmart is sitting at 8-5 with four wins and not a single loss yet in Region 7-AA, having already gotten wins under their belt in the area over Model and Gordon Central.

Last Tuesday on the road, the Jackets put up five runs in the early innings, putting up a four-run second inning performance, with Rockmart putting up two more split between the third and fourth innings to hold onto a big lead. Dade County tried to rally in the bottom half of the fifth and put up three runs to get within two in the latter half of the March 13 region contest, but came up short.

Rockmart added two more in the top of the sixth in response, and shut out the Wolverines for the win.

Rockmart then hosted Chattooga in a rout that saw the Jackets score a pair of runs in the first, five in the second that included Bailey’s grand slam, then added a run in the third and two more in the fourth to end the game in five innings on the 10-run rule.

Since the games against Social Circle were called off, Rockmart got a breather and time to relax before several road trips coming up.

The Jackets open the week in Lindale against a 6-7 Pepperell Dragons (3-1 Region 7-AA in third place) after press time on Tuesday, and follow that this Friday again traveling to Floyd County to play a 6-6 Coosa Eagles (3-1 Region 7-AA and in second place at press time.)

Following that, the Jackets head across the county in a make-up showdown against Cedartown in the second and final rivalry matchup of the season.
