Bulldogs fall short against region foes

Cedartown’s baseball team drops first trio of 5-AAAA contests.

- From staff reports

Cedartown found themselves on skid row last week, but are hopeful of recovering this week following a tough first week of play in Region 5-AAAA.

The Bulldogs went 0-3 last week against LaGrange to start the week, then dropped two more later in the week against Troup County at home, and then against Central Carroll in a second road trip.

Opening last week, Cedartown took a long drive down to play the Grangers to open region play, and battled all evening before falling in a 1- 0 contest against the region foe.

Last Thursday, they followed up at home hosting Troup County and a Tigers offense that saw the Bulldogs pick up an early lead. Cedartown dropped their offensive advantage in later innings a run at a time starting in the top half of the fourth, and ending when the Tigers put up a final run in the seventh and kept the Bulldogs bats quiet in the bottom half of the inning for the win.

A trip to Carrollton to play against the Central Lions also ended in defeat with a 7-2 road loss last Friday.

That put Cedartown at 6- 9 overall as they get ready for another busy week at home and on the road.

On Tuesday after press time, the Bulldogs host Cartersville in their latest region contest, then later in the week travel to Sandy Creek and host Chapel Hill to round out what is expected to be another set of tests against the 12-5 Purple Hurricanes who had as of the weekend gone 2-0 in the region, followed up by 6-6 Sandy Creek team who is 0-2 in 5-AAAA, and a Panthers team who sits at 8-9 overall and 1-2 in region play.

The biggest test of all comes next Monday, when the Bulldogs host rival Rockmart in a contest that was supposed to be an early season clash of titans, but was pushed back to this month due to weather and state playoff basketball games at home for the Yellow Jackets.

Sitting at 8- 5 at press time, the Jackets baseball team is thus far undefeated in region play. ( See this week’s story to find out more about Rockmart’s recent success on the baseball diamond.)
