Jackets remain in top spot in region

Rockmart dominates 7-AA baseball at 6-0, looking to another region title

- From staff reports

Despite a wet and chilly start to the week, Rockmart was able to move their schedule around and get in another two wins in region play and extend their lead in Region 7- AA as the Jackets continue at 6-0 in the area.

No one has been able in 7-AA to overcome the Jackets dominance, with the Pepperell Dragons getting stung in the first game of the week in a 9-1 Rockmart win, followed by another 4-1 victory over the Coosa Eagles to wrap up a shortened week.

Last Thursday, the Jackets finished off the Dragons in seven innings with a win for sophomore Ty Floyd after he threw a no-hitter through four innings, followed by relief from Logan Shelton and Luke Queen to finish up the game that was pushed back from earlier in the week due to wet weather conditions.

“We have been able to use three different guys to pitch in the game and been able to be okay “said head coach Kenny Yanzetich.

He added that as the team continues deeper into the region, they’ve been improving together on the field each game.

“We are playing together as a team, the kids are having a good time, they work hard at practice, they work extra, and we’ve been able to throw the ball across the plate and play good defense,” Yanzetich said. “I am fortunate enough to have a great group of kids, a great group of parents, a great ad- ministration, but the kids are what makes it.”

That has proven to work out in another way for the team as they remain up high in the rankings. As of March 19, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had the team at fourth place in Class AA, only behind Thomasville, Benedictine and Callaway. Updated rankings weren’t available as of press time.

Where the rankings matter most at the moment is in region play, and remaining undefeated at 6-0 keeps the Jackets in the top spot after defeating Pepperell, who was in second place.

Overall at 10-5, the Jackets are back in region play coming up on Tuesday after press time hosting Armuhcee, then head to Model on Friday before hosting Cass on Saturday.

Rockmart was supposed to play Cedartown to kick off the week again, but the rivalry game that was pushed back at the beginning of the season to a March 26 date was moved again last week to now act as the final game of the regular season for the Jackets.

That is if the weather holds out as early spring develops for Rockmart into what could be another big season for the Jackets baseball program.
