AKA Sorority members help with park
Theta Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., recently made improvements to Shay Hill Park, in Carrollton, a park of the Carrollton Parks and Recreation Department.
The chapter encompasses Bartow, Floyd, Polk and Carroll counties. Sorority members have a goal of restoring and renewing 1,908 existing community and school playgrounds with its Restore, Refresh and Renew Project.
This project is part of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s International initiative focused on Environmental Ownership.
The AKA 1908 Playground Project SM was launched in 2014 to insure that children will have safe and inviting places to play. The sorority has restored and renewed over 2200 existing community and school playgrounds to date.
The Theta Omicron Omega Chapter recognized this project on Saturday, June 9.
The members of Theta Omicron Omega Chapter adopted the playground at Shay Hill by partnering with Carrollton Parks and Recreation Department to restore, refresh and renew areas of the playground.
The facelift of the park included spreading mulch and pine straw, cleaning tables and painting. The chapter also replenished the Little Food Pantry located on the park’s grounds.
According to Mrs. Sherry Turner, chapter president, “All children regardless of their socio-economic status, location of their residence or housing situation deserve the ability to play in safe and inviting parks.”
