Rockmart took a 47-40 loss on their first region play date of the season against Model.

The Lady Jackets hosted the Lady Devils at home last Friday night, being the first region matchup for both teams.

The loss to Model left Rockmart with a current season record of 1-2 (0-1 7-AA).

Since the basketball season has been delayed due to the championship football games, the Lady Jackets have been away from competitive play for two weeks.

“We played like I thought we would,” head coach Tim Puckett said. “You can do things in practice but can’t simulate game play,” he added.

Sophomore Keyarah Berry led the team by adding 23 points to the scoreboard on the night for the Lady Jackets.

Junior Emma Evans and Sophomore Megan Little followed behind, with Evans scoring five points and Little scoring four. Evans’s points were earned through her efforts at the free throw line; she went three for four on the night.

“Defensively, the whole team played well, especially in the first three quarters of the game,” Puckett said. “Their effort is always there,” he said.

The Lady Jackets have serval areas that need improvement and Puckett feels their mistakes are due to the two week break.

“It’s unfortunate that our first game back had to also be our first region game and be against Model,” Puckett said. “We have a lot of things to work on. When we do get the rebound, we just give it away. We need to work on boxing out and securing the ball.”.

“For us to really be successful, we have to get back in the swing of things,” Puckett added.

Rockmart faced rival Cedartown on Saturday were set to travel to Villa Rica on Tuesday after press time.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” Puckett said about facing the Villa Rica Wildcats, who are currently ranked as the number one team in the 4A region.

“They are a good team but that’s what we want. We want to play good quality teams to make us better and give us things to improve on,” Puckett added.

The Lady Jackets were set to play at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18 at Villa Rica High School for those who get the paper early and want to watch.
