Lady Bulldogs hit hard knocks in final week of play

Winter weather might have mixed up the region schedule a bit, but it didn’t dim the spirits of the Cedartown Lady Bulldogs heading into the final region games of the season.

Despite their best efforts on the road and at home, they headed into their final game Saturday with back-to-back losses against Troup County and Sandy Creek on Senior Night last Friday.

Last Wednesday’s away region matchup for Cedartown’s girls basketball team was not their greatest winning effort. Down one starter due to freshman Marycille Brumby coming down with strep throat earlier this week, the Lady Bulldogs were unable to defeat the number two team in Region 5-4A, falling 61-37.

Much like the boys matchup, the Lady Tigers raced out to a huge advantage and never looked back. Cedartown trailed Troup County from the opening tip, and could not cut within a twenty-point deficit in the second half.

Sophomore guard Keke Turner finished with a doubledouble, netting 10 points and 13 rebounds. Her sophomore counterpart Qiana Watson also added 10 points. Tamera Beeman scored 8 points on the day, followed by Ava Allred with 6. Kam Frazier, who made some great plays defensively, had 3 points against Troup.

The Lady Bulldogs came back home last Friday to host Sandy Creek for the final regular season home game on Senior Night, but they were unable to overcome the Lady Patriots in a 63-49 loss.

Last Friday also saw an emotional presentation to Senior Lady Bulldog Tamera Beeman, who during center court honors with her parents expressed her appreciation for Head Coach Eddie Gambrell with a long hug.

As the Lady Bulldogs looked to wrap up the regular season on Saturday after press time, they stood at 14-8 overall and 6-5 in region 5-4A play, which put them in fourth place well ahead of Cartersville, LaGrange and Chapel Hill. They were on the road for the final regular season game against the Lady Panthers, who were in last place.

Check back online later this week for more about the Lady Bulldogs place in the region tournament, and further coverage.
