Teams seek to get back to play after rain delays

- WEATHER Staff reports

Oh what a wet week it was for local sports teams, who if they weren’t inside practicing were kept off baseball diamonds and tennis courts following days of downpour in Polk County.

Cedartown and Rockmart’s baseball teams, soccer teams and tennis teams were all looking ahead on the schedule to fit in new dates for make-up games on the calendar after having to call off games due to the wet weather.

The Bulldogs baseball team for instance will have to make-up several of last week’s outings on the books as the team stood at 2-0 and waiting for the clouds to clear away.

Cedartown was supposed to play against Coosa and Villa Rica this past week, but those games have already been moved back to March dates as the Bulldogs will now have a March 14 outing against Villa Rica, and a haven’t added Coosa back to the books yet.

They also have a make-up date down for March 11 to face Rockmart, who was supposed to be the second game of the season. If the weather holds out, the Bulldogs will head to Bremen on Tuesday, Adairsville on Wednesday and then play in the Bartow County Championship tournament starting on Friday against Woodland, and with a double header to be determined on Saturday.

Cedartown’s tennis teams will also have to find dates to play on the calendar after missing opportunities against to play Mt. Zion and Coosa last week due to rain as well.

The soccer teams made it through to Feb. 15 before they were forced to move their schedule around last week. Cedartown’s boys stood at 3-1 at press time heading into play on Monday against Armuchee, Tuesday against Paulding County and on Thursday at Southeast Whitfield. A scheduled match against Pepperell last week wasn’t yet on the schedule.

The Lady Bulldogs stood at 0-3 before the weather break.

(Make sure to check out Page B3 for more on how Rockmart teams fared with the weather this past week.)

The forecast might not get much better for teams with chances of rain still in the cards as of the weekend deadline. Early season spring sports had clear skies predicted for the early portion of the week, but chances of rain return later on heading into the opening of March and ahead of region play beginning for local teams.
