Aragon nabs additional suspects on drug charges

The Aragon Police Department can now add several more drug arrests to the tally of individual­s they’ve taken into custody on charges in a latest press release on incidents within the city limits.

Efforts to clamp down on drug traffickin­g included the arrest of two people from Rome were were found with more than two ounces of marijuana earlier in the week during a traffic stop. According to the release on Wednesday evening, police stopped a vehicle with multiple traffic violations, and when an officer stepped up to the driver’s side window they smelled the “pungent odor of raw marijuana emitting from the vehicle.”

Police recovered two ounces of marijuana from Fonda Shelton, 34, of Rome she removed from her back pants along with a third, undetermin­ed amount she removed from her bra. Police took her into custody along with Nicolas Matthews, 35, of Hiram.

Shelton remained in jail on a felony marijuana charge without any bond yet set. Matthews also remained behind bars on a felony marijuana possession charge, along with misdemeano­r charges for having no tail lights, tag and registrati­on requiremen­ts and driving with an open container.

Another arrest reported by the Aragon Police took place on February 28 during a safety checkpoint during the night hours. Police reported that Georgia State Troopers had stopped a vehicle suspected of having marijuana in the car, and upon further investigat­ion found more than an ounce of the drug packaged for sale, plus three individual­ly packed Fruity Pebblessty­le edible marijuana bars and $342 in cash.

Thomas Calhoun, 18 and Tyler Jackson, 25 of Cedartown were arrested along with Nasia Collins, 19, of a Rome address.

All three were booked into the Polk County Jail on multiple charges. Calhoun remained in jail with a $92,500 bond, a $75,000 bond for Jackson and a $55,000 bond for Collins.

The five latest arrests make the tally through February up to 10 arrests total on drug and various other charges. Included in those arrests and not previously named by the Aragon Police as investigat­ions were still underway were Brandon Williamson, 27 of Rockmart and Devin Jones of Aragon in a Rayburn Drive incident, and Keenan Goss, 35, of Aragon and Joshua Taylor, 36, of Villa Rica in another incident where police later tracked down a suspect who fled on foot.
