Pump failures cause closure of Girard Ave.

- Staff reports

Drivers had to detour around a road closure impacting a small portion of Girard Avenue between Sixth Street and Pine Street over this past weekend.

Cedartown City Manager Bill Fann reported that critical failures of the old main lift station on Branch Street — where the end of the line is for the sewer system as it enters the treatment plant — have caused the need to run special sewer lines across Girard Avenue on a temporary basis.

It came after repair work was just completed in recent days on one of the lift station pumps. The full lift station is set for a replacement in the coming weeks, Fann said.

Fann thanked the diligence of Kelvin Garmon and his team of Public Works employees who worked all through Thursday night to install temporary lines — two sets of which are 2,000 feet long and run across Girard and onward to the plant.

The city manager expected repairs to begin on Monday and allow the roadway to re-open, but he said Girard Avenue will have to stay closed until pump repairs are completed.

He also thanked the public for their patience with the closure.

Sewer work was underway earlier in the week on Cave Spring Road near Northside Drive to install a new lift station there not far away.

As of press time over the weekend, the roadway remained closed on Girard Avenue, but it was expected to re-open at the beginning of this week unless otherwise delayed.

Drivers who were used to Girard Avenue acting as a gateway between HON Company on Ninth Street and the rest of downtown Cedartown, or residents on Prior Station Road who cut through to Cave Spring Road, had to find detours around the closure.
