Man airlifted after I-495 crash
A man was transported to a hospital by medical helicopter following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 495 north shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday, authorities say.
According to the emergency radio broadcast, the injured man — believed to be in his 60s — suffered chest injuries from the wreck, which involved four cars.
The crash occurred near Exit 35 at around 2:55 p.m., said Sgt. Nicole Morrell, of State Police media relations. Both Interstate 495 north and south were closed shortly after.
According to the police radio broadcast, the man was extricated from the vehicle and placed in the medical helicopter, which landed on Interstate 495 at around 3:25 p.m.
The southbound lanes were opened to traffic at around 3:40 p.m., Morrell said. Approximately two hours later, the northbound side was reopened.
It is not immediately known if there were any other injuries.
Massachusetts State Police Troop A is investigating the crash with help from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Chelmsford Fire and Police departments also responded to the scene.
