Lowell, Wilmington banks robbed

A male suspect robbed the People’s United Bank in downtown Lowell at gunpoint before fleeing on a motorcycle with an undetermined amount of cash at around 3:50 p.m. Friday, police say.

According to Lowell police Capt. James Hodgdon, the suspect in the bank robbery, which took place at 10 George St., fits the description of a bank robbery that took place earlier in the day in Wilmington.

Wilmington Police were not available for comment.

Hodgdon said the suspect is described as about 5 feet, 10 inches tall. He was wearing all black clothing and a motorcycle helmet during the robbery. He fled on a motorcycle toward Warren Street from the rear of the bank.

Detectives in the Lowell Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division are investigating the robbery.

Friday’s bank robberies continue a string of such crimes taking place in Greater Lowell over the last month. During that time, five banks have been robbed throughout the region.

Santander Bank on Lakeview Avenue in Dracut was robbed on the afternoon of Aug. 17 by a suspect who did not display any weapons. Another Santander Bank on Rogers Street in Lowell, was robbed on Aug. 25. All three suspects were described as white males wearing dark clothing, but estimates on the suspects’ heights have varied, and no weapons were shown during the previous two incidents.

On Aug. 29, Eastern Bank, located at 291 Chelmsford St., Chelmsford, was robbed by an armed assailant who, like Friday’s robbery in Lowell, fled the crime scene on a motorcycle.

Bank employees told investigators the suspect walked into the bank, pulled a black revolver and demanded cash from tellers. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash on a black Honda CBR motorcycle that did not appear to have any distinct markings or a license plate.
