Laich published in national psych journal
NEWTON » Paige Laich of Chelmsford, a student at William James College, coauthored an article that has been published in Communique, a major periodical from the National Association of School Psychology.
Laich is a School Psychology student at William James, a graduate school of psychology. She wrote about the experience of facilitating a three-part book discussion series for the college community covering Carla Shedd’s book, “Unequal City: Race, Schools, and Perceptions of Injustice.”
“We worked hard to organize this event and record our experiences afterwards,” Laich said. “I’m excited our article was published because, hopefully, a broader audience can learn from our efforts.”
Unequal City examines race, geography and inequity in Chicago-based schools. Through the book discussion, Laich aimed to engage the larger William James College community in conversation about the major themes of inequality and injustice in education present in the book.
Such events that provide opportunities to connect and learn outside of the classroom are an important part of the overall education at William James.
“The purpose of this event was to foster a healthy dialogue about institutional racism, marginalization and education,” Laich said. “The first step to correcting inequality is being aware of what injustices are occurring. As enjoyable as these conversations were, the goal is to inspire action with this information.”
At William James, Laich is a member of the Leading Excellence Across Departments team and the School Psychology Academic Councils Engaging Students group. She also serves as a student leader for the National Association of School Psychology.
