President Biden has chosen the wrong path in dealing with China

- Peter Lucas Columnist

Imagine it is 1940 and a prominent reporter — say Walter Winchell — is asking President Franklin Roosevelt to comment on Hitler rounding up German Jews and sending them to concentration camps.

And imagine FDR making excuses for Germany by replying, “If you know anything about German history, you’d know that Germany has been victimized by the outer world when they haven’t been unified at home.

“So that the central — well, vastly overstated — principle of Adolph Hitler is that there must be a united, tightly controlled Germany. And Hitler uses his rationale for the things he does based on that.

“Culturally there are different norms that each country and their leaders are expected to follow.”

Winchell would have followed up by asking incredulously: “Then what Hitler is doing is all right?”

FDR’S answer would have been interesting.

However, that conversation did not take place back then, nor did FDR utter those words and neither did Winchell.

Those words — except for substituting China for Germany and Xi Jinping for Hitler — were spoken by President

Biden.

Biden was not talking about the Jews, however. He was talking about the million Uyghur Muslims that China has forced into concentration camps where they have been subjected to indoctrination through beatings, torture, rape and murder.

The ancestors of the 11 million existing Muslim Uyghurs have historically lived in northeast China for hundreds of years. It is not the first time the region has been subject to unrest. A move for regional independence was rushed by China in 1993. A decade ago, the Chinese Communist conducted a brutal crackdown on the Uyghurs following a series of terrorist attacks. Now more than 10% of the Uyghurs are held in concentration camps without charges or trials.

It should be clear, though, that it is not the Chinese people who are sending them to concentration camps, it is the policy of Jinping and the ruling Chinese Communist Party, just as it was not the average German who murdered the Jews. That was done by the many fanatical Germans of the Nazi Party who followed the deranged Hitler.

Biden made his dismissive comments about the Uyghurs during a CNN Town Hall appearance hosted by Anderson Cooper.

Biden went soft on China by saying he would bring the matter up at the UN to “impact” China’s attitude toward the Uyghurs, which is like saying to the Uyghurs: “Get lost. And don’t call me, I’ll call you.”

Viewing it as something of a Chinese public relations problem, Biden added that would be difficult for China to obtain the “moniker” of a world leader if it engaged in activity that “is contrary to basic human rights.”

“But it’s much more complicated than that,” Biden said. “I shouldn’t try to talk China policy in 10 minutes on television here.”

If you were waiting for an Anderson Cooper eyeroll, or a follow up question like, “Is what Xi Jinping is doing all right?” then you were out of luck. So much for the Uyghurs. If those remarks were made by President Donald Trump rather than President Biden, not only would Trump have been savagely ridiculed by the media for a week, but Nancy Pelosi would have had him impeached for the third time.

But this was China Joe, and China Joe gets a pass. He was not going to get involved and upset his friend Jinping by dumping on him over the Uyghurs. Cooper let him get away with it.

It was good that Cooper did so because someone in the audience might have asked about Hunter Biden and his ongoing business deals with Beijing.

Anderson Cooper’s job, as well as the job of the mainstream media, is to protect, not to probe China Joe, even when Biden is talking gibberish, as he did when he was asked about his recent phone call conversation with Jinping.

Of that call, Biden said: “I point out to him, no American president can be sustained as a president if he doesn’t reflect the values of the United States. And so the idea I’m not going to speak out against what he is doing in Hong Kong, what he’s doing with the Uyghurs in western mountains of China, and Taiwan, trying to end the One-china policy by making it forceful, I said — by the way, he gets it.” Huh?

Joe Biden, Made in China.
