Townsend Recycling Committee to host townwide cleanup

townsend » The Town of Townsend Recycling Committee will host a townwide cleanup from April 17 through April 24 and is seeking volunteers.

Volunteers are asked to state which road(s) they will be cleaning when they sign up. T-shirts and five green bags per family unit will be placed at the library during the week of April 11.

Green bags can be put out during regular trash pick up day only during the weeks of April 18 and April 25.

Umass Lowell to host event series on COVID-19, Mars research, more

lowell » Umass Lowell experts on the COVID-19 virus, NASA’S research on Mars and efforts to bring a more diverse workforce to science-related fields will share their insights as part of a free event series open to the public next week.

The series, titled, “Spring into Science: A Celebratio­n of Discovery, Innovation and Education in the Sciences,” will showcase the cutting-edge research and educationa­l opportunit­ies within Umass Lowell’s Kennedy College of Sciences.

It will be held from April 10 through April 16.

All events in the series will be held online and will be free and open to the public.

Three events will anchor the interactiv­e series; on April 13 at 5 p.m.

“The Science of COVID-19 and its Vaccines,” will be presented by Matthew Nugent, professor of biological science and Kennedy College of Sciences associate dean for research, innovation and partnershi­ps.

Noureddine Melikechi, dean of the Kennedy College of Sciences and professor of physics and applied physics, will lead “Looking for Life on Mars One Laser Pulse at a Time,” on April 16 at 12:30 p.m, where he will share his contributi­ons to NASA missions that use laser technology to analyze the red planet’s
