Conway’s journey Leads to Lancers
Former Becker sniper makes move to Worcester State
It didn’t take long for Clare Conway to warm up to her new hockey home.
The Billerica High grad and former Becker College sniper is now lighting the lamp as a member of Worcester State University’s inaugural women’s ice hockey team.
The Lancer’s senior captain scored the programs first natural hat trick on home ice, in a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Western New England last Thursday at Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center. She continued to wield a hot hand two nights later against WNE, picking up a pair of assists in a 4-4 tie. This time around, the 5foot-7 forward helped teammate Katie Puumala pot the hat trick.
As a result, Conway was named Player of the Week by the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Alliance.
“It feels pretty good,” said Conway. “It’s nice to get another one for the team. It also helps with my confidence as well, so that’s always good.”
Conway was quick to correct an earlier misprint from a recent WSU press release. She wasn’t the first WSU women’s hockey player to score a hat trick. That honor went to Cassidhe Wozniak, who did it in the program’s first official game, a 5-0 win, at Arcadia on Oct. 30.
“I got the first one at home,” Conway clarified. “Which was still pretty cool, but Cassidhe got the first one ever, in our first game ever. That said, it was still cool to have gotten my first collegiate hat trick. It was awesome to get it at home in front of my friends, family, and our fans, but that doesn’t happen without my teammates around me. I’m appreciative of that as well.”
A business administration major, Conway currently leads her team in scoring with nine points.
Born in Lowell and raised in Billerica, Conway first picked up a hockey stick at the age of 3, following in the footsteps of her brother.
