Snow may slow commute

- By Rick Sobey

The first measurable snow of the season for many across the Bay State could cause some slippery conditions during this mornings commute.

Some locations could see a coating to 2 inches of accumulating snow into today, which could affect the roads for the morning commute, according to the National Weather Service.

A developing area of low pressure off of the coast is expected to bring these periods of light snow to the region, except it will be light rain for southeast Massachusetts. The Merrimack Valley and North Shore along with the northern Berkshires could see 1 to 2 inches of snow, and the Boston metro area could get 0.5 to 1 inch.

Meteorologists are also warning about the possibility of freezing drizzle mixing in with the snow.

“That could cause some slick road conditions,” said Torry Gaucher, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office.

“With it being one of the first snows of the season and there haven’t been any treatments done on the roads yet, there could be some slick spots out there,” he added.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation tweeted, “Potential for snow & ice conditions for am commute in parts of MA. Check conditions & allow extra time when needed. Make sure to clear snow & ice from vehicle.”

Today’s high temps should only reach the mid 30s and it will be mostly cloudy, so the snow is not expected to melt immediately.

“It could stick around for a little bit,” Gaucher said.

After the snow wraps up Monday morning, the next couple of days should be dry and gradually warmer.

Tuesday’s high temps will be around 40, and Wednesday’s high temps will hit the mid 40s to kick off December.

Then there will be a chance for rain showers on Thursday, as temps climb into the 50s. The roller coaster temperatures should drop back into the low 40s on Friday with blustery conditions returning.
