Billerica can’t hold off Bishop Guertin

The Billerica High boys hockey team scored two power-play goals and led 3-1 at one point, but host Bishop Guertin scored four straight goals, two coming shorthande­d, to post a 5-3 non-league win at Skate 3 in Tyngsboro on Monday.

Goals by Danny Viscione, Will Costa and Shawn Tierney stakes Billerica to a 3-1 lead. But two shorthande­d goals, both by John Mantone, changed the momentum of the game and allowed the Nashua, N.H., school to skate away with the win.

Also finding the back of the net for BG were Logan Vogel, Austin Abbott and Devin Young, who capped the scoring with an emptynet goal.

Drew Duross, Matt Lesniak, and Charlie Wilkie also had a goal and an assist. 1 OT >> Sal Pace potted the game-winner in overtime as the Admirals topped Nashua North/souhegan. Matt Ryan assisted on the tally. Chris Bedard keyed the Broncos’ comeback scoring a second period goal.

Wrestling Boys basketball

37 >> Zach Iannacone tallied a teamhigh 23 points to power the Panthers to a victory which qualified them for the MIAA Tournament. Ayer Shirley (10-6) also received 17 points from Brian Holmes, who went over the 1,000-point career plateau last Friday, while Mark Mcdonald earned 10 points.

Tommy Bergin netted nine points to just miss reaching double figures. Adding eight points apiece for the Panthers were Cam Marshall and Bobby Manchester in Baldwinvil­le.

51 >> Bryce Goulet and Anthony Nicosia guided Tyngsboro to a win in the battle of the Tigers. Goulet collected 16 points and three rebounds, while Nicosia added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Also starring for Tyngsboro were Jimmy O’keefe (8 points, 3 assists, 4 steals and 9 rebounds), Trevor Drew (10 points, 3 steals) and Gavin Famalia (7 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists).

For Littleton, Justin Manno tallied a game-high 22 points. Maxwell Smith also shined with a 13-point effort.

Girls basketball

53 >> The Rams moved to within a win of qualifying for the state tournament by topping the Lynn school. Kerry Brown and Lindsay Mccarthy had huge offensive nights for Shawsheen (9-6). Brown tallied 25 points, while Mccarthy followed closely with 23 points.

Softball

Hayley Mccarthy has been named varsity softball head coach at Haverhill High School.

Mccarthy served as an assistant coach with the program last year. She was a four-year starter for the Fitchburg State softball team, where she earned MASCAC All-conference honors. Prior to that, she was a standout at Dracut High School, which, like Haverhill, is a member of the Merrimack Valley Conference.

Mccarthy works as a behavior specialist for the Haverhill Public Schools and resides in Lawrence.

Girls gymnastics

123.9 >> Groton-dunstable rolled to its latest win to remain undefeated in the regular season for a second year in a row. Several gymnasts had outstandin­g meets.

Sara Collins scored a 9.375 on vault. Charlotte Woodbury soared on bars with a 9.05. Samantha Difonte tallied a 9.5 on beam. Ryenne Barros scored a 9.0 on floor.
