Desmarais pins down title for Dracut/tyngsboro
Wilmington hockey coach Scanlon wins 375th game
Dracut/tyngsboro’s Brock Desmarais captured the 152-pound championship at the Division 2 state wrestling championships in Milton on Saturday.
Desmarais, the No. 1 seed, defeated secondseeded Ryan Donovan of Milford in the final to join his father and uncle as state champs. Desmarais rolled through his bracket.
He pinned Colin Hassett of Plymouth South (:23) in the round of 16, Harith Alsultani of West Springfield (:33) in a quarterfinal and Miguel Borges of Marlboro (3:19) in a semifinal.
Meanwhile, Gabe Bischoff of Greater Lowell placed third at 138 pounds. Bischoff collected four pins at the tournament, pinning Jeff Kidwell from Monty Tech at 3:59 for third place. He qualified for the Allstates tournament in Reading, Feb. 24-25.
Billerica’s Dominic Bastianelli also captured a state championship, defeating Liam Meeker in the final via a 12-5 decision.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC 2, LINCOLN-SUDBURY 1 >> Timmy Briley made 18 saves to backbone Central to the win. Max Gagnon scored both goals for the Raiders.
WILMINGTON 6, MELROSE 3 >> Head coach Steve Scanlon won his 375th hockey game, all at Wilmington High, as the Wildcats collected the Middlesex League win.
WESTFORD 4, ACTON-BOXBORO 1 >> Four goals and stingy defense was enough to lift the Ghosts to an impressive win at Skate 3 in Tyngsboro.
TEWKSBURY 3, WINCHESTER 0 >> The Redmen and goaltender Ben O’keefe continued to be terrific defensively. O’keefe, a senior captain, posted his eighth shutout of the season and improved his sparkling save percentage (.949) and goals against average (0.92) numbers.
Jeremy Insogna ignited the offense with a two-goal outing, while Tyler Barnes also found the back of Winchester’s net. Tewksbury (17-1-1) held a wide 52-16 shots advantage at the Breakaway Ice Center.
LOWELL CATHOLIC 3, BISHOP STANG 1 >> Freshman goalie Vinny D’urso kicked aside 26 shots to backbone the Crusaders to victory. Freshman Jake Cabral paced the offense with two goals, while sophomore Gage Richard netted the game-winning tally.
Assists were earned by Matt Cabral, Lucas Rego and Danny Parent. Playing strong all-around games were Matt Choate, Keegan Boyden and Brendan Giblin.

HUDSON 51, GROTON-DUNSTABLE 36 >> The Crusaders fell in a Clark Tournament Large Schools semifinal despite a 14-point effort from Andrew Stenstream. Pietro Vendramel added 10 points for Groton-dunstable (8-11) at Grafton High.
CHELMSFORD 62, NORTH MIDDLESEX 55 >> On Senior Night, senior forward Aiden Kirstal led a balanced scoring effort with 16 points as the Lions captured the nonleague victory in Chelmsford. Senior Ryan Blagg was immense in providing 12 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and four steals.
Senior Alex Perry tallied 13 points for CHS (13-7), while seniors Zack Drew (7 assists) and senior Chris Brothers (7 points) also contributed. Perry drained three 3-pointers in the first half as the Lions led 32-24 at intermission.
For North Middlesex (4-15), Brian Morse led the attack with 17 points, while Jack Callahan was right behind with a 16-point effort. Mike Reardon Jr. canned nine points for the visitors.

LEOMINSTER 53, NORTH MIDDLESEX 40 >> The Patriots fell on the road in Leominster in a CMADA Tournament Class A quarterfinal clash. North Middlesex trailed 18-6 after one quarter and couldn’t rally. Julia Landry poured in 14 points for the Townsend school.

METHUEN/TEWKSBURY 5, BEVERLY 1 >> The Red Rangers played stingy defense and received an outstanding balanced scoring attack in posting the win.
Netting goals for Methuen/tewksbury were Sammy Ryan, Kat Schille, Hannah Forget, Bree Lawrence and Sarah Doherty.
